BUY: Archie Grand Notebooks

I love making lists. This is because my memory is so ridiculously poor that if I didn’t, I wouldn’t remember anything. Ever.

So I came across these adorable notebooks which are a great way to catalouge your favourite…well anything really. From Actors you’ve met, Husband’s you’ve had to Noble’s you’ve met (and liked), they are all there.

You can get them from Archie Grand the Notebook company. They come with 160 pages of low-emission paper and are 8.99 EU. I shudder to think of the shipping charges so maybe some kind soul will start carrying them on this side of the pond.

And for the record, I think this book for me, would be blank.

WATCH: Tom Ford's A Single Man

I was lucky enough to snag tickets to the screening of Tom Ford’s debut film ‘A Single Man’ at the Toronto International Film festival. The story of an English professor whose partner dies suddenly, the film is a gorgeously shot story that uses restraint in the script balanced by visual cues. Set in the early 60s, Tom Ford’s legendary attention to detail is evident - from the props to the beautiful clothing he designed for the film. He consulted on the adaptation of the screenplay, directed and produced the film.

At times, the symbolism can be a bit heavy-handed. Ford uses colour saturation to highlight innocence and beauty (over) and drive home grief, despair and doubt (under). Clocks also feature prominently. Ford cast the film as he would a runway show - the actors are gorgeous, surreal other-worldly creatures. There is bit of pretty-overload happening here. At times it feels as if the film is really one long Gucci ad.

But not to worry. Ford’s first choice for the lead role was Colin Firth and thank God for that. Firth’s expressive face is not wasted - Ford lovingly films every nuance, each subtle gesture. Firth can communicate so much with a simple eyebrow cock or slight grimace. The beauty of the film is in its simplicity and it could have been easily over-acted. Firth’s performance blossoms in what he chooses to give away and what he holds back.

A Single Man is a great film. If you are a Tom Ford fan, you absolutely must see it. His aesthetic sensibilities are ideal for film, combined with his innate storytelling ability. I can’t wait to see which story he will tackle next. The trailer is below. Also, check out pictures from the cast Q&A on Flickr.

DRINK: 30 Day Ontario Wine Challenge

If you didn’t know already, (most likely you didn’t), we are on day 7 of the newly created 30 Day Ontario Wine Challenge. The challenge is designed to get you to “ignore your foreign wine and look closer to home” when you are picking wine.

As I’m always up for a challenge, especially those that involve wines, I agreed to participate in a portfolio tasting of a local winery as set up by the lovely folks at Spotlight Toronto.

I agreed to lend my terrace out for the taste experience. Would the Ontario wines impress?

DISCUSS: So teens don't Tweet. So what?

The media has been a buzz over the ‘new’ stats that teens don’t use Twitter. It seems that Facebook continues to be the king of the social networking tools amongst people 12-18. Its no surprise to me that teens don’t tweet - one of the biggest benefits to Twitter is that you can post on the fly. One of the tools that I have my eye on - Foursquare - is also something that needs on the fly data. Teens don’t typically have data plans.

The argument that they already have deeply established networks is a valid one. To move all of that established communication to another channel would be tricky for sure. But research from Youthography has also shown that youth under 12 aren’t bothering with Facebook anymore, choosing to use networks that their parents aren’t on too.

So why does any of this matter?

Watch: 50 Top Music Videos of the 2000s

Pitchfork has come out with their list of the top 50 music vids of the ‘Naughties’. It’s an interesting list, and it made me realize that they are one of the casualties of everyone watching less TV. It could also be that I’m getting older - don’t have time to park myself in front of Much Music for hours like I used to. Most of these vids I’ve never seen but there are some great ones on this list. Mind #50 - it’s rather…NSFW.

(thank you to Ivan Pols for the link)

Here’s on from my lastest fav band - The Dead Weather. Guns and Jack White:
